"Day of the Unborn," at a Critical Time

BUENOS AIRES, MARCH 22, 2004 (Zenit.org).- The Buenos Aires Archdiocese’s observance of the Day of the Unborn this week comes at a time when sectors of society are pressing for the legalization of abortion.

For the event Thursday, solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, the archdiocese has organized a public event in which theologians, intellectuals and public figures will speak on «the value of life as a gift of God, of marriage as the proper context for life to be born, and the constant surprise of the dignity of life.»

The Pontifical Argentine Catholic University is also organizing the initiative.

The event is taking place after jurist Carmen Argibay, nominated by the government to the Supreme Court, said she favors the legalization of abortion.

On Feb. 28, when receiving the new Argentine ambassador to the Holy See, John Paul II exhorted the country to defend «the value of human life itself» from «the moment of its conception to its natural end.»

On March 11, during a papal audience, Argentine Foreign Minister Rafael Bielsa assured the Holy Father that his government does not intend to move toward legalizing abortion.
