Sault Ste. Marie Auxiliary Bishop Paul-André Durocher, 47, was named bishop of Alexandria-Cornwall. He succeeds Bishop Eugène Philippe LaRocque. All the appointments were announced Saturday.
Toronto Auxiliary Bishop Anthony Meagher, 61, was appointed archbishop of Kingston. He succeeds Archbishop Francis John Spence.
Father Ronald Peter Fabbro, 51, superior general of the Congregation of St. Basil, was named bishop of London. He succeeds Bishop John Michael Sherlock.
Father Richard Smith, vicar general of the Archdiocese of Halifax, was appointed bishop of Pembroke. He turns 43 today. The Pembroke Diocese has been without a bishop since December 2000, when Bishop Brendan O´Brien was named archbishop of St. John´s.
London Auxiliary Bishop Richard John Grecco, 56, has been appointed auxiliary of Toronto.
Bishop Durocher is chair of the Canadian bishops´ Commission for Theology and a member of the bishops´ Committee for Programs and Priorities.
Archbishop Meagher is president of the Catholic World Youth Day 2002 Council, representing the country´s Catholic bishops in preparation for the upcoming festival.
Bishop-designate Fabbro has been superior general of the Basilians since 1997.
Bishop-elect Smith has been Halifax vicar general since last year. He worked in pastoral ministry to the Francophone community of Halifax from 1990-1991.
Bishop Grecco is chair of the bishops´ Commission for Christian Education (English sector) and is an episcopal adviser to the Third Continental Congress on Vocations.
