Today, His Holiness Pope Francis accepted the resignation of the Most Reverend Dorylas Moreau, Bishop of the Diocese of Rouyn-Noranda, for health reasons, and appointed the Most Reverend Gilles Lemay, Bishop of the Diocese of Amos, as the Apostolic Administrator for the Diocese of Rouyn-Noranda.
Bishop Moreau is originally from Kamouraska, Québec. He was ordained to the priesthood on 20 May 1972 for the Diocese of Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pocatière. On 30 November 2001, he was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Rouyn-Noranda and ordained Bishop on 2 March 2002, where he served for 17 years.
As a member of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), Bishop Moreau served as a member, then Chairman, of the Commission for Liturgy and the Sacraments (French Sector), as well as a member of the Commission for Doctrine. Internationally, he served as a member of the Association épiscopale liturgique pour les pays francophones (AELF) and the Commission épiscopale francophone pour les traductions liturgiques (CEFTL).
The Diocese of Rouyn-Noranda has 36 parishes and missions, with a Catholic population of 54,972 served by 20 diocesan priests, two priests who are members of institutes of consecrated life, one Brother and 53 Sisters who are members of institutes of consecrated life, as well as 11 lay pastoral assistants.
The Diocese of Amos has 53 parishes and missions, with a Catholic population of 76,497 served by 14 diocesan priests, 2 priests who are members of institutes of consecrated life, one permanent Deacon, 35 Sisters who are members of institutes of consecrated life, as well as three lay pastoral assistants.
