Cardinal Cleared Over Claims of Abuse Cover-up

LONDON, JULY 20, 2003 ( Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor of Westminster has been cleared of allegations that he covered up child abuse, the Telegraph reported.

The newspaper today said the Crown Prosecution Service, which has studied the results of a Sussex police investigation, has decided that no further action should be taken.

The allegations date from 1985, when he was bishop of Arundel and Brighton, and concern his admission that he failed to report allegations of child abuse against Father Michael Hill. Bishop Murphy-O’Connor instead moved Hill to the chaplaincy at Gatwick Airport, where he believed that Hill would not be a danger to children.
