John Paul II Plans to Join In Corpus Christi Procession

VATICAN CITY, MAY 27, 2002 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II will preside over the feast of Corpus Christi this Thursday in the atrium of the Basilica of St. John Lateran, and he will later follow the eucharistic procession through the streets of Rome.

According to a statement issued today by the Vatican Office of Liturgical Celebrations, the Mass will be celebrated by Cardinal Camillo Ruini, the Pope´s vicar for the Rome Diocese.

As in previous years, at the end of the Mass the Holy Father will follow the kilometer-long eucharistic procession, which will take place on the Via Merulana, from St. John Lateran to the Basilica of St. Mary Major.

The Pontiff will complete the procession in a “popemobile,” kneeling on a prie-dieu before the Eucharist exposed in a monstrance.
