Vatican spokesman Joaquín Navarro Valls explained today in a press statement that the Church in Italy celebrates the solemnity of Corpus Christi on May 29, a Sunday.

Archbishop Francesco Cacucci of Bari-Bitonto also announced the news at midday in the Bari cathedral.

He said the decision goes along with what Benedict XVI told the cardinal electors the day after his election: that the solemnity of Corpus Christi be celebrated with “particular prominence.”

The Holy Father’s visit is taking place in the context of the Year of the Eucharist, convoked by Pope John Paul II.

Benedict XVI’s first confirmed international trip will be in August for World Youth Day in Cologne, Germany.
