Pope’s Appeal for Communications: ‘Be Constructive, Serve the Truth’

During Regina Caeli, Stresses that Communicators Must ‘Reject Prejudice Towards Others and Foster Hope and Trust Today’

“Pray for communication, in all its forms, to be truly constructive, in the service of truth by refusing prejudices and by spreading hope and trust in our time.”

The Pope made this appeal to pilgrims and visitors gathered in St. Peter’s Square during his Regina Caeli address yesterday, May 28, which also marked the World Day of Social Communications.

Acknowledging the World Day’s theme is “Do not be afraid because I am with you” (Is 43.5), Francis observed, “social media offer the opportunity to share and disseminate news instantly.”

However, he warned, “such news can be beautiful or bad, true or false.”

“Pray for communication, in all its forms,” he encouraged, “to be truly constructive, in the service of truth by refusing prejudices and by spreading hope and trust in our time.”

In a tweet yesterday, Pope Francis said: “I encourage everyone to engage in constructive forms of communication that reject prejudice towards others and foster hope and trust today.”

In his message for the World Day of Social Communications, he also stressed the importance of communicating the Good News.

“Today too,” it noted, “the Spirit continues to sow in us a desire for the Kingdom, thanks to all those who, drawing inspiration from the Good News amid the dramatic events of our time, shine like beacons in the darkness of this world, shedding light along the way and opening ever new paths of confidence and hope.”
