BRUSSELS, Belgium, DEC. 9, 2002 (Zenit.org).- Euro-Fam, a pro-family organization, is urging citizens to write to their representatives in the European Parliament before Dec. 17 to vote “No” to the Sandbaek report.
The report would indirectly compel all EU inhabitants to accept legislation on abortion proposed by the European Union, even if abortion is illegal in their own country.
Such is the case of Spain, Ireland and Italy, where abortion is only permitted in exceptional cases.
The Sandbaek report, formally entitled “Health and Developing Countries: Rights in the Matter of Reproduction and Sexuality,” would go a step further. It would force those countries being incorporated — such as mostly pro-life Poland — to accept abortion.
Pressure against this report has already delayed it on two occasions, but more citizens are needed to express their conviction to Europarliamentarians who work on this matter.
Euro-Fam says it is vital for citizens to continue to contact ministers and ambassadors, as well as members of the Development Commission of the European Parliament, to succeed in rejecting the funding of abortion within the framework of the new regulation.
European regulation has priority over national law, and these norms are directly applicable and obligatory within all member states, Euro-Fam warns.
