"As a Colombian, I am very happy because things have been taken seriously," Bishop Julio César Vidal of Monteria said over Caracol Radio. "Not only is there a desire but a decision to contribute to Colombia's peace."

The bishop, who observes the negotiations between the two sides, said the government delegates stressed the respect for human rights and the extension of a cease-fire ordered by the Self-Defense Units of Colombia (AUC) beginning Dec. 1.

The meeting took place Thursday somewhere in northern Colombia.
