He succeeds Archbishop Cipriano Calderón Polo, who resigned for reasons of age.

Archbishop Robles Díaz, 65, was born in El Grullo, Mexico. He entered the Holy See's diplomatic service in 1967. Among his duties, he has worked as a nuncio in Sudan and Uganda. He has been nuncio in Cuba since 1999.

The Pope intends for the Latin America commission, in part, to "foster relations between international and national ecclesiastical institutions, which work in favor of regions of Latin America, and the dicasteries of the Roman Curia."

The commission works under the Vatican Congregation for Bishops.
