The Pope has appointed Monsignor Dennis Marion Schnurr as bishop of Duluth, Minnesota.

Monsignor Schnurr, of the clergy of Sioux City, Iowa, is the outgoing secretary-general of the U.S. bishops´ conference.

He was born in Hospers, Iowa, in the Diocese of Sioux City, on June 21, 1948. From 1970 to 1974 he studied at the North American Pontifical College and the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, where he received a licentiate in theology. In 1980 he obtained a canon law degree from Catholic University in Washington, D.C.

Monsignor Schnurr was ordained a priest on July 20, 1974, for the Diocese of Sioux City. He was assistant parish priest at the Sioux City Cathedral (1974-1977) and was chancellor of the Washington archdiocese (1980-1985).

From 1985 to 1989 he worked as local collaborator of the apostolic nunciature in Washington. Later, he was assistant secretary-general of the bishops´ conference and, beginning in 1994, secretary-general.
