Nun to Be Honored for Starting Bank for Poor in India

BANGALORE, India, MAR. 8, 2001 (Zenit.org).- Salesian Sister Nancy Pereira, 74, will receive the Golden Mimosa prize, awarded annually to mark Woman´s Day, for her efforts in starting a Bank for the Poor here.

The ceremony will be held at the Polivalente Auditorium of San Giovanni, in La Punta, Italy. It is being organized by the Blue Drop Group, an Italian cultural and charitable association.

Sister Nancy´s Bank for the Poor is part of a Family Integral Development Education Scheme, modeled after a similar project known as Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, founded by Muhammad Yunus. The Bank for the Poor, inaugurated in 1990, assists poor families to improve their living conditions and level of education.
