Guatemala Marks Anniversary of Bishop´s Murder

GUATEMALA CITY, APR. 26, 2001 (Zenit.org).- Honduran Cardinal Oscar Rodríguez, archbishop of Tegucigalpa, will attend the commemorative ceremonies organized by the Guatemalan bishops´ conference, on the third anniversary of the murder of Bishop Juan Gerardi.

The case continues unresolved, after a month of court hearings against five accused.

The Guatemalan Church has planned three days of activities, which began today in the capital city with the opening of a crypt in the cathedral, where the bishop´s remains lie. The latter was brutally killed on April 26, 1998.

To date, 83 witnesses have given testimony in 20 court hearings, which began March 23.
