Guatemalan police arrested the three on Tuesday in the murder of Sister Barbara Ann Ford, who was a member of the New York Congregation of the Sisters of Charity.

The 64-year-old was slain Saturday on a street after being assaulted by three men who stole her car but abandoned it a short distance away. Her remains were taken to the Bronx on Tuesday.

Some Church leaders and humanitarian organizations speculate that it was a political crime, because of the social work the nun was engaged in.

Nery Rodenas, director of the Human Rights Office of the Guatemala Archdiocese, said in a press statement: «We are puzzled by the cruelty with which Ford was killed, by the quantity of shells, and the fact the vehicle was not stolen; we presume it was a political crime.»
