Dominicans to Pick New Master General This Week

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island, JULY 8, 2001 (Zenit.org).- More than 200 members of the Dominican family are gathered here for their general chapter to elect the next master general.

The delegates, representing more than 6, 000 brothers, 2, 000 nuns and more than 100,000 lay Dominicans, will be electing the 87th master general of the Order of Preachers, founded in 1215.

This election is scheduled for Saturday. The new master general will succeed Father Timothy Radcliffe, the first English master of the order.

The general chapter runs from July 10 till Aug. 8.
