The bishops´ subcommission for the Family and Defense of Life made its observation in a note on the occasion of its course on «Bioethics: Recognition of the Person.»
Dr. Gómez Lavín of Pamplona, quoting a study by Dr. Anne Speckhard, pointed out some of the common problems among women who have had an abortion: 61% increased their use of alcohol; 65% contemplated suicide; 69% had sexual problems; 77% felt an inability to communicate; and 81% cried frequently.
The subcommission´s note emphasizes the need for a positive defense of «every life and everyone´s life,» awakening in society an effective and legal recognition of the right to life of every human being.
«Not everything that can be done or experimented in the laboratory or with sick individuals, should be done,» the panel said. «Research as well as laws are obliged to recognize the person and his dignity, and to respect and protect the life of all.»
