Nigerian Youths Denounce Muslim Extremists´ Violence

ABUJA, Nigeria, AUG. 31, 2001 (Zenit.org).- A Christian youth association has raised the alarm about the rising tensions among the Christian and Muslim communities in the states of Kaduna and Bauchi.

On Wednesday, in the wake of intimidation of Christian citizens by Muslim extremists, the group Youth Can appealed to President Olusegun Obasanjo to declare a state of emergency in the municipalities of Tawafa Balewa and Bogoro.

Last February, Kaduna´s parliament approved the enforcement of a partial form of Shariah, or Islamic law. The announcement triggered ethnic-religious confrontations which led to an estimated 1,300 to 2,000 deaths. Shariah is in force in nine Nigerian states.
