The ecclesiastic traveled with the Serbian patriarch from Belgrade to take charge of the representation, Itar-Tass agency reported. The ceremony was held in the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul.

The ties between these two Churches, considered the largest of Orthodoxy in terms of number of faithful, were reinforced following NATO´s operations in 1999 against Yugoslavia.

On several occasions, Russian Patriarch Alexy II condemned the bombardments and visited Belgrade to concelebrate a liturgy with the Serbian patriarch for the victims.
