Since the end of November, 45,000 refugees have been resettled in five new U.N. refugee camps, where they receive proper care and accommodation.

«The very existence of a camp like Jalozai was a sad reminder of international indifference to the Afghan situation prior to the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001,» High Commissioner Ruud Lubbers told Vatican Radio.

Located 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Peshawar, the Jalozai camp began to receive refugees at the end of the year 2000. Eventually it sheltered 70,000. The refugees, including many elderly, women and children, had to protect themselves from the cold and rain with plastic sheets.
