Dutch Bishops Express Horror over Assassination of Pim Fortuyn

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, MAY 7, 2002 (Zenit.org).- Catholic bishops reacted with «disconcert and horror» at the assassination of Pim Fortuyn, a candidate for prime minister.

The Dutch episcopal conference addressed a statement to the country, appealing for «reflection on the growing violence in society,» and expressing its «sympathy and compassion» to Fortuyn´s family, friends and relatives.

The general elections will be held May 15, despite Monday´s assassination of the 54-year-old far-right political leader in the town of Hilversum, Prime Minister Wim Kok said today.

The Dutch Minister of Justice said the assassin might be a radical ecologist.
