Papal Program OK´d for Trip to Canada, Guatemala and Mexico

VATICAN CITY, MAY 27, 2002 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II approved the program for his July 30-Aug. 2 trip to Mexico and Guatemala, as well as his July 23-30 visit to Canada, the organizer of papal trips said.

“The Supreme Pontiff has personally approved this program which, therefore, has now been established,” Monsignor Renato Boccardo said today. “No one has told us, the organizers, that these visits might be canceled.”

The monsignor said he had made two trips to Latin America to prepare the papal visit: one in January and the other before Easter.

Erroneously interpreting statements of Vatican spokesman Joaquín Navarro-Valls, some news agencies reported Sunday that the visits to Guatemala and Mexico might be eliminated from the Pope´s trip to the American continent for Toronto´s World Youth Day.
