Yugoslavia Awards Papal Representative from War Years

BELGRADE, Yugoslavia, SEPT. 9, 2002 (Zenit.org).- Vatican efforts for peace during the Balkans war was recognized by Yugoslavia, which gave an award to the prelate who was the papal representative in the country at that time.

Archbishop Santos Abril Castello, now apostolic nuncio in Argentina, was papal nuncio in Belgrade from 1996-2000. He has been awarded «the medal of the Yugoslavian star in the first degree.»

The award is in recognition of the Spanish archbishop’s service in relations between Yugoslavia and the Vatican during the war.

Archbishop Santos Abril, 67, was one of John Paul II’s Spanish teachers after his election as Pope in 1978. At that time, the archbishop worked in the Vatican State Secretariat.
