Archbishop Named for Calabar, Nigeria

CALABAR, Nigeria, DEC. 17, 2003 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II appointed Bishop Joseph Edra Ukpo of Ogoja, Nigeria, as archbishop of Calabar.

Bishop Ukpo will succeed Archbishop Brian David Usanga, who retired for reasons of age, the Vatican press office announced today.

Joseph Edra Ukpo was born on June 6, 1937. He was ordained for the Diocese of Ogoja in 1965. He was appointed auxiliary bishop of Ogoja in 1971 and named bishop in March 1973.

The Calabar Archdiocese has 2.3 million inhabitants, including 189,000 Catholics.
