The U.S.-based foundation was established in 1990 by Cardinal John Krol, the then archbishop emeritus of Philadelphia.

Every year the Papal Foundation collects funds to support the Pope’s charitable works worldwide.

The Pope welcomed the foundation’s 52 members today with Jesus’ words to the apostles after his resurrection: “Peace be with you.”

“I am most grateful to all of you for your continued support of my pastoral ministry to the universal Church,” John Paul II said in English.

“Indeed, your dedication to the Papal Foundation through the generous gift of your time, talent, and treasure is a concrete example of your love and commitment to the Church and the Successor of Peter,” he said.

The Papal Foundation has helped John Paul II fund charitable works for victims of hurricanes, AIDS, war and other catastrophes.
