Addressing a crowd of thousands gathered in St. Peter's Square today, the Pope said that at Pentecost the "Church is born, Mystical Body of Christ spread throughout the world."

"It is made up of men and women of all races and cultures, united in faith and love of the Most Holy Trinity, to be a sign and instrument of the unity of the whole of humankind," he said from the window of his study overlooking the square.

"Conformed by the Spirit in Christ, new man, believers become his witnesses, sowers of hope, agents of mercy and peace," the Holy Father said in a clear voice before reciting the Regina Caeli.

He invoked the intercession of Mary "so that the wonders of Pentecost will be renewed in the Church and all men will be able to receive the joyful proclamation of salvation."
