General Consultant Named for Vatican City

VATICAN CITY, MARCH 16, 2005 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II appointed professor Cesare Mirabelli, one of Italy’s most outstanding constitutionalists, as general consultant of Vatican City State.

Mirabelli, retired president of the Italian Constitutional Court and an expert in ecclesiastical comparative law, is replacing Giulio Sacchetti, who presented his resignation to the Pope for reasons of health.

The Holy Father also appointed as consultants of Vatican City State Bishop Bruno Bertagna, secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Interpretation of Legislative Texts, as well as Carlo Balestrero, former administrative director of the Toniolo Institute, and Massimo Vari, former judge of the Italian Constitutional Court.

According to the Fundamental Law of Vatican City State, the «general consultant and the consultants of the state, named by the Supreme Pontiff for a five-year period, offer their assistance in the elaboration of laws and other matters of particular importance.»
