Father Patrick Burke, currently a parish priest in Stirlingshire, Scotland, has been appointed as an official in the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, formerly headed by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger.

Fr. Patrick Burke, currently a parish priest in Stirlingshire, will take up his post as an official in the Doctrinal Section of the Congregation this September.

The congregation asked Cardinal Keith O’Brien, archbishop of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh, to release Father Burke of his diocesan duties last November, and although short of priests, the cardinal agreed in «recognition of the universal needs of the Church.»

Last week, Benedict XVI appointed Archbishop William Levada of San Francisco as prefect of the congregation, the position held by the Pope until he was elected to the Papacy April 19.

Father Patrick will begin in his post in September.
