Benedict XVI Receives President of Malawi

CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy, SEPT. 22, 2005 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI received President Bingu Wa Mutharika of Malawi at the papal summer residence, part of the series of audiences the Pope is granting to heads of state and government.

Mutharika was accompanied by his wife and entourage at today’s audience. As with similar audiences, the Holy See published no details of the meeting.

Recently the United Nations launched an appeal to collect $88 million to ease the hunger of a third of Malawi’s 12 million inhabitants. About 80% of the southern African nation is Christian.
