MANASSAS, Virginia, SEPT. 15, 2009 (Zenit.org).- The Cardinal Newman Society is offering free online guidance to young people and parents who are looking for colleges that are Catholic in name and practice.

A press release from the society announced today the publication of a second edition of «The Newman Guide to Choosing a Catholic College.»

This guide is also being offered as a free online resource, which aims to help students who are «seeking a faithful Catholic education.»

The society reported that more than 8,000 copies of the previous edition, published two years ago, were distributed, prompting them to invest in an updated version.

The guide analyzes the «Catholic identity» of 21 colleges and universities in the United States, as well as eight other international or unique study programs.

Patrick Reilly, president of the society, said that when the first edition of the guide came out, «we found that families were eagerly searching for help in identifying Catholic colleges that truly embrace their Catholic mission in all facets of campus life.»

He continued: «The mission of The Cardinal Newman Society is to help renew Catholic higher education, and we can think of no better way to do that than by offering this edition of The Newman Guide as a book but also as a free online resource.

«We are doing this so that as many Catholic families as possible are able to learn about the quality academics and faithful campus life available at the recommended colleges.»

The guide offers the conclusions of four years of research and interviews on a variety of relevant topics: academics, governance, spiritual life, student activities, and residence life.

The updated version also includes letters from the college presidents as well as financial aid information.

As well, the guide features writings by several Catholic leaders on topics of relevance for families searching for the «right» college, including essays by: Father Benedict Groeschel, Father John McCloskey, Peter Kreeft, Eileen Cubanski, Phil Lenahan and Kathryn Jean Lopez.
