Pope Meets With Bolivian President

VATICAN CITY, MAY 17, 2010 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI received in audience today President Evo Morales Ayma of Bolivia, the Vatican reported.

A communiqué released at midday in Rome noted that the «cordial discussions provided an opportunity for a fruitful exchange of opinions on questions concerning the current international and regional situation, and on the need to develop greater social awareness for the protection of the environment.»

«Attention then turned to various aspects of the situation in Bolivia itself, in particular collaboration between Church and State in the areas of education, healthcare, and social policies in defense of the weakest,» the text added.

After meeting with the Pontiff for approximately 25 minutes, Morales met with the Pope’s secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, who was accompanied by Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, secretary for relations with states.
