Holy Cross Father Richard Warner was elected superior on Friday at the congregation’s general chapter in Rome.
He will leave Indiana for Rome, where he will direct the work of the congregation around the world.
Father Warner succeeds Holy Cross Father Hugh Cleary, who served the maximum 12-year term allowed in the congregation.
Father Warner is himself a graduate of Notre Dame (1962). He then studied theology in Santiago, Chile, and was ordained in 1966 in Ohio.
Father Warner has been directing campus ministry at Notre Dame for 21 years. The university awarded him an honorary doctorate of law degree in 1987.
