The Pope mentioned southern Asia at the conclusion of today's general audience, saying he is following "with concern the events that have taken place these days in several regions."

In Pakistan, for example, 16 people were killed today in missile attacks from U.S. unmanned drones, which are seeking to root out terrorist strongholds in the territory.

Meanwhile, in the Kashmir region of India, unrest continues with 18 people killed Monday in mob violence. This round of protests has been going on for three months, but the conflict can be traced back to the 1940s when the region was split between India and Pakistan.

"I pray for the victims," the Pope said, "and ask that respect of religious liberty and the logic of reconciliation and peace may prevail over hatred and violence."
