Bishop Ignacio Carrasco de Paula was put in charge of the academy on June 30. He had been serving as chancellor of the academy. His appointment filled the spot left vacant by the naming of Archbishop Salvatore Fisichella as the president of the newly established Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization.

Bishop Carrasco de Paula, a 73-year-old Spanish priest-doctor and member of Opus Dei, was the director of the Bioethics Institute at Rome’s University of the Sacred Heart and a member of the ethics committee for the experimentation clinic at the Gemelli Policlinic of Rome.

Other changes

Monsignor Enrico dal Covolo, rector of the Pontifical Lateran University, was also elevated to the dignity of bishop. The Salesian prelate is 59.

And Benedict XVI accepted the resignation of Bishop Dominique Kimpinde Amando of Kalemie-Kirungu, Congo. The bishop led that diocese for more than 30 years, having been appointed in 1980. He turned 77 on Aug. 14.
