Bishop Ignacio Carrasco de Paula was put in charge of the academy on June 30. He had been serving as chancellor of the academy. His appointment filled the spot left vacant by the naming of Archbishop Salvatore Fisichella as the president of the newly established Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization.
Bishop Carrasco de Paula, a 73-year-old Spanish priest-doctor and member of Opus Dei, was the director of the Bioethics Institute at Rome’s University of the Sacred Heart and a member of the ethics committee for the experimentation clinic at the Gemelli Policlinic of Rome.
