VATICAN CITY, NOV. 26, 2010 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI is mourning the death of Manuela Camagni, who formed part of a team of women who look after the papal apartments.

Camagni was killed Tuesday night when she was struck by a car on Rome’s via Nomentana. She was a member of the association of Memores Domini, the branch of Communion and Liberation that lives total consecration to the Lord in the midst of the world.

«The Holy Father was informed of the sad event before celebrating his morning Mass and he prayed for the repose of the soul of the deceased,» reported Vatican Radio on Wednesday.

Camagni, 56, was one of the four Memores Domini who look after the papal apartments. Among her duties were the apartments of the Pope’s two secretaries, Monsignor Georg Ganswein and Monsignor Alfred Xuereb.

The four Memores Domini, the two secretaries and the papal chamber aid are a «family» that shares meals with Benedict XVI when he does not have guests; this «family» is of course now in mourning.

Before entering Benedict XVI’s service, Camagni worked for the then archbishop of Tunis, Patriarch Fouad Twal of Jerusalem.

Gianni Alemanno, mayor of Rome, expressed his sympathy to the community, as well as his commitment to take measures to guarantee greater safety in that hub of the northeast of Rome.
