LONDON, NOV. 22, 2011 (Zenit.org).- Next year Queen Elizabeth II will celebrate 60 years on the throne and Catholics are being asked to pray for her.
Among the decisions made by the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales during its plenary session last week was the publication of a prayer for the occasion of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
On June 3, 2012, Holy Trinity Sunday, parishes will mark the anniversary with a special first reading, taken from 1 Kings 3:11-14. The passage relates God’s answer to King Solomon when he was invited to ask for a gift and Solomon asked for wisdom to rule his people.
Then, following the prayer after Communion, and before the final blessing, there will be a special prayer for the Queen. The prayer asks for blessings for the monarch and her family and for her to be preserved from all that is harmful and evil.
The initiative follows the successful visit by Benedict XVI to the United Kingdom last year.
