On Thursday the facade of the Cathedral of St Mary’s in Sydney, Australia, will once more be lit up with a series of laser projections for the period leading up to Christmas.
The lights, accompanied by an audio show, will be projected on to the Cathedral’s 75-metre (246-foot) high and 33-metre (108-foot) wide sandstone facade.
There will be three separate sequences of projections, with a total running time of about 14 minutes. The images will be repeated from 8:30 pm to midnight from December 12 up until Christmas day.
The first series of images will relate the story of the Nativity. The second will express the hope and excitement of the night before Christmas as families and communities enter into the true spirit of Christmas and the birth of Our Lord.
The final sequence in the light and audio show honors the Madonna and the Christ-child with images taken from the great artworks of the Renaissance through to contemporary art.
The launch of the lights on December 12, by Sydney’s Cardinal George Pell, will be live-streamed on Xt3.com from 8pm – Sydney time. By the next day the video will be available on demand from Xt3.
The launch, which is expected to attract several thousand people, will also include performances by some of Sydney’s choirs. These include the Australian Girls Choir, the Sydney Street Choir as well as singers from Artes Christi, a Sydney-based arts association established to express faith through the arts with productions of plays, musicals and concerts.
