The Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano is to offer a new series of articles focussing on the theology of women, Vatican Radio reports.

The articles will appear in the newspaper’s monthly insert “Women Church World” (Donna Chiesa Mondo) and will begin in its next edition due out January 2-3.

The series comes in response to Pope Francis’ calls for a re-examination of the “theology of women” in the Church.

The paper’s associate editor, Lucetta Scaraffia, says that each month a male or female theologian will analyze “this open question central to the Church today” as a means for “enriching…the discussion” about the contributions to and the role of women in the Church.

Italian theologian and writer Msgr Pierangelo Sequeri will be the first to author a piece in the series.

The monthly insert also highlights the family which will be the focus of the Synod of Bishops in October 2014.

Benedict XVI was the first to raise the profile of women’s issues in the paper, increasing the number of female staff and giving the green light to a special women’s supplement.
