Cardinal Cleemis Elected to Lead India's Bishops

Syro-Malankara Major Archbishop Cardinal Baselios Cleemis was elected president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) on Tuesday at its plenary meeting in Pala, Kerala.

Cardinal Cleemis is currently the vice president of CBCI and also president of the Kerala Catholic Bishops Council.

The 54-year-old was made a cardinal in the November 2012 consistory.

He replaces Cardinal Oswald Gracias, archbishop of Bombay, who completed his four-year term as the President of CBCI
