A member of the Syrian opposition who attended the Geneva II Peace Conference has publicly called for the release of Christians kidnapped in the war-torn country.
Islamic scholar Sheikh Mohammad Abdel-Hady al-Yaaqubi said the attacks against innocent people “do not reflect the values of Islam.»
Sheik al-Yaaqubi called on «all Islamic militants to immediately release all those who are unjustly detained against their will, especially the innocent bishops, nuns and monks».
The Islamic opposition member issued a statement during a press conference following a meeting between the anti-Assad opposition and Dr. Olav Fykse Tveit, the secretary general of the World Council of Churches.
According to Fides News Agency, Dr. Tveit appealed for prayers for peace in Syria.
«We as religious leaders have to carry the hope that miracles are possible and that there will be peace,” he said. “If we are not doing this, who will?»
