A CNN poll released Thursday finds that a strong majority of Americans want restrictions on the legality of abortion.

The largest percentage of Americans (38%) favor abortion being legal in only a few circumstances.

At the opposite ends of the spectrum, 27% want abortion legal in all circumstances, while 20% want it illegal in all circumstances.

Just 13% favor abortion being legal in most circumstances.

The poll also found that Americans continue to oppose public funding for abortion, an issue that has been much in the spotlight over the past several years during debates on President Barack Obama’s health care reform plan.

According to the survey, 56% of Americans remain opposed to using public funds for abortions for women who cannot afford them, with only 39% favoring public funding for abortions.

Pointing to American uncertainties over how that public funding can come about, the poll found that 49% say women who receive government subsidies for health insurance should be able to get a plan that covers abortion services. The same percentage (49%) disagreed.
