Pope Francis today appointed Archbishop Christophe Pierre as apostolic nuncio to the United States of America.
The 70-year-old prelate, a native of France, had been the apostolic nuncio to Mexico since 2007.
He has represented the Pope for more than 20 years, beginning with an assignment as nuncio to Haiti in 1995, and then serving in Uganda before being sent to Mexico.
He replaces Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, who reached the age of retirement earlier this year.
