Pope Francis Receives German Chancellor Angela Merkel

Special Remembrance Was Reserved for Former Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl

Pope Francis received Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Angela Merkel, in audience on June 17, 2017.
According to a statement released by the Holy See Press Office, the discussions were cordial, and highlighted the good existing relations and fruitful collaboration between the Holy See and Germany.
“Issues of common interest were then addressed, with special regard for the upcoming G20 meeting in Hamburg, and the parties agreed on the need to dedicate special attention to the responsibility of the international community in combating poverty and hunger, the global threat of terrorism, and climate change.”
During their talks, remembered especially, the statement noted, was former Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl, who died Friday, June 16, “and his tireless work in favor of the unification of Germany and the unity of Europe.”
After meeting with the Pope, the German Chancellor met with Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and Secretary for Relations with States, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher.
