“I repeat the firm condemnation of every form of torture and call on everyone to work for its abolishment and support victims and families,” was Pope Francis’ tweet published on June 26, 2017, on the occasion of the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.
This United Nations International Day was established in 1997, ”In view of eliminating torture totally and of ensuring the effective implementation of the Convention against torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading punishments or treatments, which came into force on June 26, 1987.»
The Holy See adhered to this convention in 2002.
According to ACAT, a Christian NGO against torture, which publishes a report on this subject every year, one out of two countries, always practices torture, including democratic States.
