Cardinal Sean O’Malley has condemned the «senseless» taking of innocent human life at the Poway Synagogue shooting in California, stressing that there is «absolutely no justification» for this tragic attack on our Jewish brothers and sisters.
On April 27, at the Chabad Synagogue on Poway, California, near San Diego, in what is being considered by many as a hate crime, a gunman stormed in killing a woman, Lori Gilbert Kaye, and wounding others.
The Cardinal of Boston, who is the President of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors and advisor to Pope Francis, expressed: «Once again we witness violence at a place of worship, the Congregation Chabad in Poway, CA. There is absolutely no justification for yesterday’s attack on the holy day of the Chabad, the last day of Passover, and the taking of innocent human life.»
The American cardinal expressed his prayers «for our Jewish brothers and sisters, for the family and friends of Lori Gilbert Kaye, for those who were injured and the entire synagogue congregation» which «feels the pain and experiences the trauma of this senseless act.»
Thanking the «courageous intervention» of the first responders and praying for their safety, Cardinal O’Malley underscored: «Together, we renew our commitment to reject these assaults on human dignity & religious freedom, banishing the darkness through the light of the Risen Christ.»
