On July 8, 2019, Pope Francis appointed Monsignor Rosario Saro Vella, 67, Bishop of the Diocese of Moramanga, Madagascar.
Monsignor Vella is Italian. He entered the Salesians and professed his vows in 1968, and was ordained priest in 1979. Two years later, he was sent as a missionary to Madagascar. From 1982 to 1995 he was the parish priest at Ankililoaka; from 1989 to 1990 Master of Novices, then from 1995 to 2007, parish priest in different parishes.
Benedict XVI appointed him Bishop of Ambanja in 2007. He was also Professor of Patristics in the inter-diocesan Major Seminary of Antsiranana.
The Episcopal See of Moramanga was vacant since the appointment of the former Bishop, Monsignor Gaetano Di Pierro, as head of the Diocese of Farafangana in March 2018.
