Pope Francis appointed Monsignor Bernardito Auza Apostolic Nuncio in Spain and in the Principality of Andorra, and Titular Archbishop of Suacia. To date, Monsignor Auza was the Holy See’s Permanent Observer at the United Nations Organization in New York.
The Holy See’s Press Office published the appointment at noon on Tuesday, October 1, 2019. The new Apostolic Nuncio in Spain substitutes Monsignor Renzo Fratini in the post.
Born in the Philippines
Monsignor Bernardito Auza was born on June 10, 1959, in Talibon, the Philippines. He was ordained priest on June 29, 1985, and incardinated in the diocese of Talibon. He has a doctorate in Theology.
He entered the Holy See’s Diplomatic Service on June 1, 1990, and has worked in the Apostolic Nunciatures of Madagascar, Bulgaria, and Albania, and in the Section for Relations with States of the State Secretariat. On May 8, 2008, he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio in Haiti. He has been Permanent Observer of the Holy See at the United Nations in New York since July 1, 2014, and, since July 16 of the same year, at the Organization of American States. He is Titular Archbishop of Suacia.
