Father Guy Boulanger, a priest of the Archdiocese of Sherbrooke, was appointed by Pope Francis to become the 3rd bishop of the diocese of Rouyn-Noranda. Mgr Boulanger thus succeeds Mgr Dorylas Moreau, who died last October.
“It is with great humility that I will serve the Catholics of the Diocese of Rouyn-Noranda. I must conclude my files in progress in Sherbrooke and I have three months to be ordained bishop. It will be a great challenge, but I am ready to take it up in faith, ”explains Bishop Boulanger.
Until his recent appointment, the latter occupied the functions of chancellor and vicar general with Mgr Luc Cyr, Archbishop of Sherbrooke. He was also moderator of the pastoral charge in Richmond and president of the Assembly of Chancellors of Quebec. Despite his busy schedule, he was present in parishes on Sundays in the Cookshire-Eaton and East Angus area.
“I lose a precious collaborator, but the Church of Rouyn-Noranda gains a competent bishop in whom I have great confidence. I am convinced that Archbishop Boulanger has the profile to assume the new responsibilities entrusted to him, ”said Archbishop Luc Cyr.
Archbishop Guy Boulanger was born in Sainte-Cécile-de-Whitton, in Estrie, in 1963. In addition to his bachelor’s degrees in theology and law, the latter holds a master’s degree in pastoral work as well as a license and a doctorate in canon law. Since his ordination in 1991, he has notably been vicar in Sherbrooke and Disraeli before being parish priest of four parishes in the Lac-Mégantic region.
Archbishop Guy Boulanger had been chancellor since 2000 and assumed the task of vicar-general since 2012.
