Following the Pertinent Investigations

The procedure on the alleged burial in the Vatican of young Emanuela Orlandi has been filed by the Single Judge of Vatican City State, which gives the family the possibility to proceed in private any other investigation.

On Thursday morning, April 30, 2020, the Holy See Press Office made this information known in a press release of the Judiciary.

No Traces of Emanuela

The dossier was opened last summer, after the complaint of two relatives of the young woman who disappeared on June 22, 1983, after which the Promoter of Justice, Gian Piero Milano, and his Assistant, Alessandro Diddi, authorized access to two tombs located inside the Teutonic Cemetery, which subsequently were found to be empty.

In this context, a subsequent investigation ordered by the magistrates led to the discovery, in a subterranean room in the cemetery complex, of thousands of bone fragments of different periods and origins.

The Fragments Found

The tests carried out on these findings by Professor Giovanni Arcudi, ex offico expert, in the presence of the Orlandi Family’s advisers, came to the conclusion that the fragments found go back to a time before Emanuela’s disappearance: the most recent go back at least one hundred years.

Hence the file request that “closes one of the chapters of the sad story,” to which the Vatican Authorities “offered from the beginning the amplest collaboration,” stated the Judiciary of Vatican State.

With this spirit, the filing procedure gives the Orlandi Family the possibility to proceed, in private, to any other investigation on the fragments already found and kept in sealed containers in the Gendarmerie.
