Lisbon WYD (Day 1): Nine Drones Intercepted, 200,000 Young People Attend First Mass and Other Amazing Data

The Security Forces and Organizing Committee revealed data of the WYD’s first days.

(ZENIT News / Lisbon, 02.08.2023).- In two press conferences in the World Youth Day Media Center, the organizing team and the police and security forces gave relevant data regarding the participation in the WYD’s first day:

  • 7,120 priests concelebrated the Mass on Tuesday, August 1
  • 500 Bishops concelebrated (30 from Portugal)
  • 20 Cardinals concelebrated
  • 1,800 Extraordinary Ministers helped to distribute communion
  • 7,000 volunteers (young people) helped in some way on the first day of the WYD

And in terms of security:

  • 4,764 flights that arrived in the first days at Lisbon’s Airport were controlled
  • 950,081 people went through security controls in the first days of the WYD
  • 14,495 cars went through security controls in the first days of the WYD
  • 1,275 boats went through security controls in the first days of the WYD
  • There were 239,640 pilgrims in the August 1 events
  • 200,000 people participated in the opening Mass in Lisbon’s Edward VII Park
  • For security reasons, 9 drones were intercepted in the first days of the WYD
  • For security reasons, the police carried out 150,000 personal checks
  • 403 people received some form of assistance by the police
