(ZENIT News / Vatican City, 11.21.2023).- On the afternoon of Tuesday, November 21 (Rome time), Pope Francis called the winner of the Argentine presidential elections, Javier Milei. The call lasted just under 10 minutes. In this way, relations between the Pontiff and the president-elect, who in the recent past expressed serious reservations about the person and ideas of the Pope, especially in economic matters, have eased.
The Argentine press, citing the president-elect’s political party, highlights that the conversation was pleasant. In fact, President Milei invited the Pope to visit Argentina, both as head of state and as the leader of the Catholic Church. In response to Milei’s invitation for Pope Francis to visit the country, the Pope replied with a brief «we’ll see.»
Pope Francis reportedly listened to the challenges mentioned by Milei and told him that he must face this stage with «wisdom and courage.» Towards the end of the call, the Pope told the leader of Libertad Avanza, «I wish you the best.» Speculations suggest that the Pope may still intend to visit Argentina in 2024.
